Sefton Coast
The Sefton Coast, the largest sand dune system in England, has
21 miles of beach, sand dunes and woodland.
The area is internationally important for its rare species of
wildlife including the Natterjack Toad, Sand Lizard and Red
Squirrel. It is also one of Europe’s premier birdwatching locations
and over 300 different species have so far been recorded
there.
An RSPB nature reserve at Marshside is nationally important because
of its wintering wildfowl, with numbers at any one time often
exceeding 40,000.
The coast contains 20 kilometres of Site of Scientific Interest
(SSSI) and a National Nature Reserve (NNR) at Ainsdale Dunes,
whilst the ‘Velvet Trail’ takes its name from the carpets of lush
vegetation and can be followed on foot.
Lifeboat Road, Ainsdale and Southport were awarded the ENCAMS
Seaside Award in 2005.
