Borrowdale
Borrowdale is a spectacular landscape of rugged crags, inviting
fells and wooded valleys, including half of Derwent Water and the
prehistoric stone circle at Castlerigg, near Keswick.
It is a classic example of a steep-sided glacial valley in
mountainous countryside, and runs 10 miles from the high fells
(Scafell Pike is its highest summit) down to the shores of Derwent
Water.
The lake is easily accessible as it is ringed by road and
footpath along its shores and by paths at higher levels and this,
combined with its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty, make it
very popular.
One of the scenic gems of this area is the little side valley of
Watendlath, perched above the lake, containing the famous packhorse
Ashness Bridge and a small tarn noted for its fishing. In the main
valley, some 4 miles from Keswick past the impressive Lodore Falls,
is the attractive village of Grange in Borrowdale, reached via the
striking two-arched bridge, which is popular for picnics.
