Delamere
Delamere Forest, at over 950 hectares, is Cheshire’s largest area
of woodland and a great place to escape the bustle of modern life.
It is the ideal place for walking, with dry sandstone paths,
easy-to-walk forest roads and trails ideal for families and those
less mobile. In addition, the new planting of Old Pale has created
a great place to walk with magnificent views as far as Liverpool’s
famous skyline. There are also 3 easy waymarked walking routes to
try, ranging from 0.75 miles to nearly 3 miles.
For cyclists, Delamere is served by the National Cycle Network
and offers smooth sandy tracks with only a few gentle hills to
encounter. Two waymarked routes can be followed, or for the more
adventurous, a climb to the top of Old Pale is rewarded with the
views mentioned previously. The forest’s visitor centre now also
offers a bike wash so you can even leave all the mud you’ve
collected behind!
For those really wanting to get into the swing of things,
Delamere now has Go Ape! – a high-wire forest adventure course of
rope bridges, Tarzan swings and zip slides up to almost 35 feet
above the forest floor. It boasts the longest zip slide of any Go
Ape! course at some 200 metres long and is open between 24th March
and 29th October and at weekends in November. Places must be booked
in advance.
Within Delamere, Blakemere Moss is an excellent habitat for a
wide variety of wildlife and birds, and has become very popular
with birdwatchers.
