Thirlmere Reservoir supplies water to Manchester and many other parts of Northwest England.

It is set within an estate of over 4,800 hectares that includes tenanted farms, extensive areas of woodland, open fells and, to the east, the summit of Helvellyn, the third-largest fell in the Lake District.

The reservoir shore is now fully accessible to the public, with canoeing, sailboarding and dinghy sailing allowed for free at any time. Fishing is also free to holders of Environment Agency rod licences.

Much of the estate’s woodland is open to the public to explore, with trails to follow at Swirls, Launchy Gill and Harrop, whilst the extensive areas of open fell above the woods and farmland provide unrestricted access to walkers.

Other facilities include toilets and a picnic area, whilst there are car parks at Armboth, Dobgill, Legburthwaite and Swirls.
