Witherslack

Swans on a lake

Witherslack woodlands is a large area that extends over the lower slopes of Whitbarrow, a site of Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve.

Also known as Whitbarrow Scar (though properly that term applies to the cliffs lining its western edge), the hill lies about 5 miles south-west of Kendal, close to the village of Witherslack.

Much of the woodland you can see today was initially formed naturally but, from 1919 onwards, additional planting was undertaken by the Forestry Commission, who now hold leases on parts of the hill. A variety of techniques are used to manage the woodland, including coppicing and these ensure that a wide range of wildlife continues to flourish.

The summit of Whitbarrow Scar is known as Lord’s Seat, and a walk to here is featured in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland by Alfred Wainwright
