Hellvelyn
Helvellyn, in central Lakeland, is the third largest fell in the
Lake District and one of only four over 3,000 feet high.
The best route to the summit is from the east of the peak along
a gentle climb starting in Thirlmere Valley.
Other peaks to be found on Helvellyn’s north-south ridge, which
can be attempted on a variety of walks, include Helvellyn Lower
Man, White Side, Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Great Dodd, Dollywaggon
Pike and Seat Sandal.
Two sharp spurs lead off Helvellyn’s summit, Swirral Edge and
the finest ridge in the Lake District, Striding Edge, one of the
best-known scrambles anywhere.
Helvellyn is strongly associated with the poet William
Wordsworth, who used to regularly climb the mountain and wrote
about it several times.
