Open Spaces

Open spaces in the northwest with tree

The Northwest has by far the largest areas of remote country to enjoy in England.

Natural landscapes such as the North Pennine Moors, the fells of the central Lake District or the wide expanse of the Forest of Bowland are ideal for those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Some large country estates with acres of parkland to explore offer an opportunity closer to some of the bigger urban areas. Examples include Tatton Park, Lyme Park and Dunham Massey, one of the finest examples in the country of ancient woodland and especially important for deadwood beetles.

The wide-open spaces of Shap, Haweswater and Armboth fells in Cumbria provide a home for herds of Red Deer, one of our increasingly rare and shy creatures.
