Eden Valley & North Pennines
The broad river Eden is the main feature of the valley,
appealing to walkers, canoeists, climbers, fishermen and a variety
of wildlife, including Peregrine Falcons.
This is superb walking country with fine views, miles of
footpaths, magnificent walks and rough fell routes on the vast
Pennine Hills AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
Activities range from strenuous high mountain routes to gentle
riverside strolls, plus sailing, canoeing and other
watersports.
Challenging waters include the stretch of the Eden between
Lazonby and Armathwaite, where the rapids cut through a sandstone
gorge.
Cyclists can enjoy the famous C2C cycle route or the 112-mile
circular Eden Valley Cycle Route, which passes through some lovely
villages.
The wildlife interest in the area is focused on the outstanding
aquatic and wetland habitats of the River Eden and its tributaries,
including populations of salmon.
