Solway Coast & Plain
The Solway Coast and Firth is the third largest estuary in the
UK. It supports internationally important populations of
over-wintering wildfowl, waders and breeding birds.
The Firth is the only wintering site for the entire Spitzbergen
Barnacle Goose population, whilst the sand dunes at Silloth and
Mawbray provide important habitats for species such as the rare
Natterjack Toad.
The Solway Coast provides spectacular views across to Scotland and
the Isle of Man, especially at sunset.
It is also the starting point for the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path,
a national trail running along the awe-inspiring frontier of the
Roman Empire.
