Lancs Valley & South Pennines
The South Pennines, which straddles the Lancashire-Yorkshire
border, is an officially designated Heritage Area.
A network of well established footpaths provide access to the
countryside that has been the inspiration for the Bronte sisters
and the late poet laureate Ted Hughes.
The South Pennines is home to Merlins, Peregrines and the rare
Ringed Ouzel and the moorlands are so important for the survival of
upland birds that the area has been recognised as a Special
Protection Area. This makes it one of the most important sites in
Europe for bird conservation.
