Sedgewick Trail
The Sedgewick Trail in Cumbria is a geological fault line, where
two blocks of the earth’s crust have fractured to reveal the strata
beneath.
Located on the Dent Fault, where it crosses a river in
Yorkshire, the trail is named after renowned 19th century geologist
Adam Sedgewick.
Here, the river has exposed small areas of blocks of the earth’s
crust and layers of strata and sediment are clearly visible. 330
million year-old synclines and folds can be seen and the nature of
the rock changes abruptly as the river crosses the Dent Fault.
A leaflet about the trail and the geologist Adam Sedgewick is
available from National Park centres.
