Ullswater
Ullswater, at 8 miles long, is the second largest lake in the Lake
District.
The lake itself offers many opportunities for quiet watersports
such as sailing, sailboarding, fishing and cruising; while the
surrounding valleys and mountains provide a wealth of walks, from
short ambles to challenging hikes.
There are various points around the lake to launch sailboats and
small craft, and the leisurely Ullswater Steamers operate
throughout the year from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge.
Surrounding the lake there are an abundance of quiet lanes and
off-road tracks for cycling and mountain biking. Mountain bikes are
allowed on the many bridle paths, but not on some of the footpaths,
which are narrow, environmentally sensitive, unstable or simply
dangerous for cyclists. It is advisable to research your planned
route thoroughly.
Ullswater also has an annual walking festival in May - a
week-long opportunity to enjoy guided walks with qualified and
informative knowledgeable local guides.
