Natterjack Toad
Natterjacks are claimed to be Europe’s noisiest amphibian, the call
of the male being audible over several kilometres.
The rarest of Britain’s 3 native frogs and toads is now an
officially endangered species and is only found at a limited number
of sites in the UK.
Fortunately there are a number of perfect habitats to be found
along the region’s coastline between Lancashire and northern
Cumbria, with the Northwest actually holding over 50% of the UK’s
Natterjack Toad population.
Colonies occur on the Sefton Coast but the main concentration of
sites is in Cumbria, at Drigg Dunes and Gullery, where the sandy
dunes and marram grass form a perfect habitat.
