Red Deer
Britain’s largest native deer and largest land mammal is widespread
mainly in the Scottish Highlands, but can also be seen in the
Northwest on the open moorlands of north Cumbria.
Many of the often isolated groups have been
supplemented at various times by introduced stocks or escapees from
deer parks, with the country’s only pure-bred population of red
deer to be found in the Lake District.
Armboth Fell, above Thirlmere, has large
heather-clad areas, which are perfect for the deer herds, while the
land around Haweswater and Shap Fells also have populations roaming
freely.
