Red Squirrel
The red squirrel is one of the UK’s ‘flagship species’ – our
equivalent of China’s giant panda or Asian tigers.
Conservation work at a number of sites in the region has ensured
that there are a small number of places where populations of the
red squirrel continue to thrive.
The National Trust-owned dunes and woods at Formby Point on the
Sefton Coast contain a red squirrel reserve, where visitors can
watch and feed the creatures, while woodlands at Borrowdale and
Thirlmere in the Lake District also have populations living within
them.
